What was your first Detector? Empty What was your first Detector?

Post by Guest Fri 16 Dec 2011, 9:55 pm

I thought I would post this topic as I found a website tonight that may make a few think back to the good old days, It has listed, heaps of the early detectors, all makes and models.

My first swinging machine was a Fisher 552-D and a 441-D

My father bought these new when I was a kid, my brother still has the 441 and the 552 lives next door to him, I have been trying to buy it back since I found out that it got sold a few years ago. affraid

DETECTOR LINK

Manuals can still be downloaded for the machines from the above link.
Cheers

GoldSeeker 15000, was the first detector I ever used, almost wrapped it around a tree.
Had a lot more luck with the GT & FT 16000 followed by a Midas 500.

White 6000d bought it back in 81 used it a bit but didn't find any colour, sold it to Bill Dunn of Billanooka station, (now part of Jigalong) when i went out to deliever it he showed me a lovely coffee jar of nuggets that he had found with his previous detector, almost didn't complete the deal after seeing that. :)

My first detector was a kitset BFO from Dick Smith that I found a penny with.. Woo hoo. So I ordered a Whites Coinmaster 5000D from a place in Sydney (1977) and it went from there. Can't remember how many I have had, but Garrett Deepseeker was the first I found a pocket of nuggets at Ora Banda with. A favourite memory is the Whites 6DB that I found heaps with. Also had several Fishers and 3 x MLab PIs, an Xterra and Gold Snoops for fun. More than a dozen anyway...

Whats going on here??? I keep typing appendage as in appendage Smith and it keeps replacing the *appendage* with appendage?????

appendage dammit!!!???

Geez... Ever tried to type Dixx Smith before?? lol You Win... Richard Smith!!

i have no idea what my first detector was. it's just been too long and i was too young. 8 maybe. but i remember it didn't really work, so must have been a appendage smith or tandy machine...

my first gold detector was a Minelab GP Extreme (modded). i don't recommend the mods.

I now own a GPX 5000. what more can i say. it's a "GOD" machine.

Grabbed a pick and pan oh so long ago and headed out past Worlds End in SA , armed with a map drawn by the old uncle , who won a living there in the great depression.
You could still see the humpies dug out of little gullies and roofed with any old tin and tree boughs.
Relics every where, but they meant nothing then. Shocked
Later 20 years on with the first detector, a Tandy special, you know, the orange one,
Set of to grab the gold, grab the relics and old tin more like. Mad
Had an early Fisher later and had a great time in the Wauparringa country, up by Yunta, but never got a thing, it took a ML to show me the gold. Very Happy
Reckon Fisher were amongst the first to advertise recreational detectors in the old
Popular mechanics mags after the war,

Yeah Pete that was the Mongolata, a poor and desperate gold field,
back then the gate was unlocked, and the abandoned homestead was still in tact
complete with early Ford buckboard in the shed. :o

Just the usual. A couple of Whites that I never found a thing with then a Groundhog, Goldbug,Ft1600,Xt1700 then SD2000,2100,2200,Extreme,back to a 2100,then3500,4000,4500 and now the 5000.

The best of the lot was the 2100 but some more time with the 5000 should beat that.
