Hot Rock or Not
Was able to have a swing over the weekend prior to work in Kalgoorlie
I only had the SDC on me and managed to ping 3 bits
I got two out of the same hole ( A First For Me )
Anyway I had a hot rock give me a good signal so I picked it up and have got it at home
The rock is about 6 cm X 3 cm and weighs 221 g
I did a ground balance over the rock and it still gave a good signal
It is really heavy for the size so I now have it in a Bath of Acid to see whats in side
Fingers crossed

Always check any rock that gives a signal, as I found many specimens that had no gold visible, what I usually do while detecting with the small ones that I suspect are just hotrocks I put them on a flat rock and pound them with the back of the pick, if it is a hotrock they will usually just disintegrate as they are generally light and soft.
Anything more solid and heavy you are better pocketing it and have a better look at it when back in camp, if you don't have a dolly pot then the easiest way to find out what it is just to crack it open, its safer to wrap it in some rag to contain the pieces and to stop bits hitting you in the face, and give it bash to break it up, species with no visible gold are not worth anything so all you can do is crush it.
First time I cracked a quarts species for a better look a piece hit me in the face just under my left eye and cut me, lesson learnt and only got two eyes so take care to contain it.

Re: Hot Rock or Not
Checking to see if it is magnetic or not will not tell you if there is some gold in the middle of it. We have picked up many numerous hot rocks and they were magnetic but they still had gold in them. Even some of the early guys to the muster saw a couple of hot rocks that they said throw them, gold was showing in very small specks on a couple that we pointed out to them and turned out they had good gold in them when crushed. The guys were surprised that they had gold. Just to clarify, we only crushed when we could after we left when we could but if you looked carefully at them there was specks showing.
Check all your hot rocks carefully. TG
