Off season project - Page 4 Empty Off season project

Post by pilbarachad Sat 05 Jan 2013, 1:46 pm

First topic message reminder :

Gday all.

I just bought myself a trade trailer, had some friends down in perth who were kind enough to pick it up and drive it back to hedland which worked out well. Anyway it rocked up yesterday and im pretty happy with it, i had only seen pictures on gumtree so wasnt real sure what was gonna rock up!! Plan is to convert it to an offroad camper over the next few months - hopefully i can get it bush ready by about easter time.

This is what ive got planned for it:
-Solar and electric fit out. Already got a 120w solar panel/regulator and some deep cycle batteries and have ordered internal and external LED lighting.
-Water tank and pump. Thinking about 80Litres or so for the tank.
-Rooftop tent, this will be down the track a bit, will just throw the swag or jet tent in the back for the first few expeditions.
-Pull out awning
-Thicker stronger draw bar, may also extend and make a section for a quad to be mounted on.
-Gas bottle and jerry can holders all round.
-Few extra inches of lift, which is the first job im gonna tackle.

Trailer is currently sitting on 195 R14's so sits pretty low, im going to throw some 6 stud (hilux) hubs on the axles, get some 16" rims and match tyre size to my car. Also want to upgrade the suspension, thinking i might chase up some second hand hilux leaf springs and throw them on.

Anyway this is what im working with.

Well it has hardly stopped raining the last few days here in Hedland, which normally I wouldn't be real happy about, but atleast it gives me plenty of opportunity to get some work done on the trailer. Heres the progress.

Yesterday morning I got the spare wheel carrier sorted.

[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

This morning I tacked up the stone guard frame as you can see below

[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

Here you can see it in place. You can also see the racks I fabbed up on the roof for the roof top tent including the side uprights for mounting a pull out awning.

As you can see ive been stuffing around with accessories lately. I should probably pull my finger out soon and finish of the important stuff like the doors Laughing

It's lookin good now but I gotta question. are the jerry cans for fuel or water ?
If they are for fuel, maybe some kind of cover to stop sleezy low lifes from siphoning.

Cheers
Cliff

Yeah they are fuel. I have had a quick think about ways to stop people thieving it, but haven't decided what to do about it yet scratch . My original thought was to just run a bit of chain from one end of the holder through the handles of the jerrycans to the other end where it could be padlocked, which would stop them taking the jerry cans but still leave it able to be siphoned confused

coz its not licenced u will need to leave all the fruit of it including the spare wheel on the back-even take off the tool box coz I fear u will go over the allowable tare weight and they might want u to put brakes on it.
u will also need to put it over the weigh bridge to get the official weight certificate..if u haven't got a vin id plate then u will need to get one and apply for a number (owner builder) and pop rivet it to the LHS guard at the front of the trailer..

I could be wrong but check up just in case..they should have a inspection station in hedland..otherwise KARRATHA MECHANICAL
and SPECIALISED TRUCK SERVICES do inspections--pre book

Post by snapper Sun 02 Jun 2013, 3:38 pm

Here is a little project my brother and i built before i headed over here,
it was just an old 6x4 trailer that we gave a new paint job and built the rest in the fatory where he worked.
As you can see the jerry can holders i bought which were around $50 each, they cost nearly as much as the rest of the job but i felt as they were all ready made and were quick to install, and can be padlocked with the bar that goes over the top sitting on top of the opening of the jerrycan making it that bit harder to get to the fuel, i did put extra steel framework behind each of the holders.
the weight of the trailer went from just under 200 kilos to 370 kilos so it had to be regersted, on top of this it can carry about 400 kilos of gear in the back

Off season project - Page 4 Empty Latest update

Post by pilbarachad Sun 16 Jun 2013, 3:08 pm

Well spent most of yesterday working on the trailer, its finally starting to feel like the finish is in sight.

I finally finished fabbing up the other door frame, which included pre drilling of all the holes for fixing the sheeting to it and a couple of coats of cold gal.

[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

Also cut out the sheeting for the other door frame, and started fitting the locking mechanisms. Heres a pic of it just sitting in place. Shheting is not properly fixed in place yet and hinges not mounted yet either (its just there for looks at the moment:D)

[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

And finally, I made the solar panel mounting supports- heres one all primed up.

[img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

I also managed to finish off the guard supports I was doing and have started painting inside the guards with a couple coats of primer and a couple coats of stoneguard.

Post by madmav Sun 16 Jun 2013, 4:40 pm

hey there,,, m8 just a word of advise,,, that poly block is the same as the one I split on my caravan, they are not as good as they say.

our van is only 16'6" and max of 1900kg fully loaded, never been off road as such and only travelled about 1000km's, it split right through the block at the tow pivot, the hitch is rated at 3000kg's, so threw it away, thankfull I didn't loose the van.

as far as I am concerned they are a problem waiting to happen

happy hunting

Thanks for the advice madmav. That's the second or third bad thing ive heard about them now. Do you know if yours was a genuine tregg hitch or just a copy of ebay??? From what ive picked up it seems its the cheap copy ones that seem to fail, which unfortunately is exactly what I bought. I guess ill keep a close eye on mine and do a couple of easier trips with it before taking it anywhere too rough-lets see what happens.

was a treg unit and paid top dollar for it, needless to say was far from happy, but had it for 12mths b4 fitting it and then another 8mths or so b4 it failed, so no come back on quality or defects, will rubbish them forever now

The trailer is looking good.  But ya haven't welded on my bed yet  Razz
The hitch is now the problem so it seems.  There must be a decent hitch out there somewhere for off road use.
Maybe the ringfeder is the way to go  Suspect

Nah not regod yet oneday. Gonna wait till the doors are done and its painted. The plan all along was to remove everything before taking it in, that's why ive made all the fittings bolt on. Hopefully in a few weeks to a month or so I can get it done, which probably means itll take me 3 months:lol:

We bought an Oz Hitch, forms a total universal type hitch and is self positioning to a point, plus it is rated at 3500kg and aussie made

Thanks madmav. I just had a look at there website and it seems they sell a conversion kit which looks like it would only take 10 minutes to do- I might look into it. Heres the conversion if any one is interested.

Heres one with the solar panel mounted up front.

Heres a shot inside showing the locking mechanism

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]" />

The stone guard frame, jerrycan holder, spare wheel carrier and solar panel mounts have all been removed for painting now, will do the same for the roof racks over the weekend.

I probably could have got the doors fully finished this weekend, but I have misplaced the gas struts and dust seal I bought a few months ago:x Mad Mad , so may make a start on the external painting instead.

As you can see its been stripped and had a couple coats of primer slapped on. I also cut about 6 inches of the back end of the guards as they were sitting pretty close to the ground and were asking to get ripped off.

Also re ordered dust seal and gas struts- which means ill probably find the missing ones now:P
