Re: testing coils
G'day Lindsay
Basically you will need to check for resistance between certain pins in the coil plug.
As shown in the diagram below Mono coils are fairly straightforward in their wiring
at the plug end with the exception of a few linked up pins.
Set your multi meter at 200 ohms and with the meter leads in the correct meter sockets,
check for resistance by following the diagram below, if no resistance what so ever is seen
on your meter you have an open circuit in your coil that will stop it's operation.
If an open circuit is found then firstly you need to open up the coil plug and inspect the soldered
connections as in diagram for breakage or dry socket, if they seem ok then you very well could have
a wire breakage in the top 10cm of the lead before the plug, always fit a new plug instead of
re using the old one.
Prior to fitting the new plug and after trimming off 5 - 10cm of the coil lead test the lead again
to make sure you have resistance, while doing this check wiggle the lead at the strain relief gland
to check for a loose or broken solder joint at the coil end.
Dont forget to replace the heat shrink inside the coil plug otherwise increased EMI will creep in.
All PI Mono & DD coils are wired the same regardless of Brand or size etc for Minelab Tecta's.
Hope this helps Lindsay
