Whats an alluvial plant? Empty Whats an alluvial plant?

Post by farm boy Tue 19 Jun 2012, 12:13 pm

Hi Guys

I found an old map with a mine showing - looks like its on a remnant strip of BIF from what i can see.

its titled "alluvial plant" with the "X" mine symbol having the spades facing into the ground.

Anyone able to tell me anymore about what this could be? Is it a processing plant for alluvial gold in the immediate vicinity?

Cheers

Hi

Its an old alluvial plant, either being a commercial sized dry blowing operation or a wet plant with jigs and sluices.
The crossed spades upside down symbol is the symbol for a abandoned alluvial diggings, as opposed to
crossed picks upside down which are abandoned mine shaft symbols.

Sounds like an old surface gold area, perfect for a swing on.

Thanks Pete. Thats awesome.

Im not sure how much of the coarse stuff was found in the area. My research shows the mining centre produced a little alluvial gold, so hopefully thats the case.

Ever had much luck getting coarse gold in narrow strips of BIF?

Hi, My understanding of BIF is iron rich ancient water courses carrying the black heavy sands has turned to sedementry rock over time & have been lifted by an underground upheaval & a mountain range of BIF is the result. Not a Geo , but thats what one told me once, cheers albo.

You dont tend to find a lot of heavy course gold on the actual BIF
but it can be good where BIF is close to a contact shear zone or
close to a porphyritic thrust.

Hi All
Well I guess that my guess was right (banded iron formation), they don't call Ironstone the "Mother of Gold" for nothing.

your right Lee
I always look for Ironstone formations and breakaways in association with faults and another major one is lateritic soils --these are two very good indicators of color--
Buck quartz is a very good indicator of jack shit 99% of the time..

Usually marked as CZL on Geological maps also known as lateritic dericrusts.

Hi Pete
U have to like those places marked with gold blocks--and chase the fault lines on those geo maps--even those old tenement maps of the 60's and 70's--not many detectors out there then..

aah still learning my friend

Yeah Ray

Most of the work i do is what i call geo Tectin, followin the fractures and
shear zones on proven gold bearing rock types, acid dykes, and thrusts and synclines.
We can always fall back onto old ground later in the trip but yav always gotta be on the hunt for new untapped sources otherwise we'd just
be boring old detectorists not prospectors. kwdf

Hey Pete
Go the "Prospector" I think its the only way to make consistant finds, It might take a while to work it out but I believe it will pay off in the long run & man i gets you out there checking things out (says me who hasn't been out since NOV)
cheers

spot on pete--
thats the unfortunate delema of gold detecting--once u take it --it dosent return --unlike fishing

I can go months without finding anything but just to keep the juices flowing I go back every now and then and tect and old area just to see some color again..

Thats were everyone should learn the art of a prospector--any idiot can get a detector and swing it in the bush in hope--unfortunately hope wont pay her way..

The geo maps will set up in the right frame of mind--thats what we were doin at nullagine and it was slowly payin dividends--just the mrs gave me the sh#ts and I had to come home to sort her out..unfortunately she didnt threaten me with leaving--otherwise I'd still b in nullagine..
