Detecting verses Horticulture

ever thought about growing saffron--well if u haven't then u bloody well should.

Why u ask

I went and brought a packet from Coles for cooking classes and bugger me dead the bloody stuff cost me $7.54 for .5gram
yep and that equates to $150 per 10grams--not great u say--well hang on coz u don't have to spend $10,000 to get set up for the gear that's needed and if u put in the cost of the vehicle well that total goes sky ward.

Not sure what's needed to grow the stuff but if its like weed then it cant be too hard

Yeah Ray that's like $15,000 per kilo or $150,000 per ton, I wonder how many Safron flower "stigmas" to the ton considering each flower produces only 3. It may still be easier to find gold I reckon, even the SDC2300 nuglets would add up quicker.

I did look into saffron a few yrs ago to grow on our property down south Ray. It takes 75,000 blossoms to produce just a pound of dried saffron threads that wholesale for $70 per ounce. it takes time for the bulbs to mature to produce multi flower stems and you only get 3 stigma per flower. its easy to grow and likes the cooler climate of our SW and you can get the bulbs in aus so could be a worthy venture.
