BIGGEM we know nothing about finding gold even though we've spent the last week working hard at it.

On the other hand if it's Big Gem stones you're after we may be able to suggest a few spots.

Hi Big Gem,

As far as gemstones go WA missed out badly but there are colourful rocks just the same. Some can be polished to make fabulous displays.
There's real gold to be found at Reedy. Turn right off the Great Northern Highway at S27 05 30.26 E118 07 54.5 If you can find the old tracks north to Boomerang Mine and the surrounding areas you'll find Jaspa and if you're not finding gold (like us) there's ample fools gold.
You can find ample amethyst crystals at Nullagine. Turn right just as you enter town into Skull Springs Road, travel 6.5km turn right onto Anthill Road (not marked but has a red rock), cross Millenium Mine haul road (do not travel this road), continue 23km to two green skid mounted buildings on the left. The amethyst starts at the buildings and the reef continues for several hundred metres. Just follow the trail of amethyst.
The Commet Mine at Marble Bar is worth a visit. They have a visitor centre that can direct you to local agate and other collectable rock in the area.
There's great banded iron and other pretty rocks at the summit of Mount Goldsworthy. It's worth the drive in to view the old open cut mine that is flooded with crystal clear acidic water.
We've not looked for gems in the Northern Territory but the Plenty Highway from Alice Springs to Boulia in Queensland is worth a drive. Drop in at Gem Tree caravan park for Garnet and Zircon tours. You'll be assured to return so nice cuttable gen stones. The Harts Range is riddled with Garnet and and other stones and supplied much of the worlds Mica prior to the manufacture of synthetic insulators. The old mines are worth a visit.
The area north of Emerald in Queensland produces some very nice sapphire. Its worth spending a few days fossicking in this area.
The Stanthorpe area in Queensland has beautiful rock crystal. I always enjoy a bush walk through Red Rock Gorge and the surrounding area.
Once you cross the border south there are abundant gemstones of all types. Start by visiting the Emmaville Gemstone Museum. The curator will guide you to the local areas where he has found much of the rock on display.
Glen Innes to the south has some spectacular scenery and a great variety of gemstones.
For Opal you just need to head out to the main well known opal fields, Opalton QLD, Yowah for Boulder Opal, White Cliffs NSW, Coober Pedy SA.

WA didn't quite miss out on Gems that badly, we have the only two Diamond mines in Australia here in WA. these diamond mines were initially discovered by gold prospectors, they found no gold, but diamonds by accident. The Argyle discovery was found in Smoke Creek by gold prospectors, and then traced back to the source or what is known as "the pipe" in Barramundi Gap".
Diamond is the purest substance in the world.
It is possible that one day another prospector will find diamonds in the Kimberley
again, maybe a prospector from this very forum. Its harsh country up there, the type of country only accessible by foot, horse, camel , chopper or parachute if your game.
