2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
A friend and I are planning a trip to Leonora in April. Will be flying into Kalgoorlie from Perth. Can we rent a car or truck there that can make it out in the bush? Any suggestions? Thanks bob

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
If you have never been here before.
Please make sure you have an EPIRB/PLB. Do Not go bush without one.
A GPS. Hand held with map if you can.
A compass.
Snake bite kit/first aid kit.
Lots of water, drinking and for washing.
Spare batteries of any electronics your carrying.
Spare fuel, its a frigen big country out there. If you break down DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR. Use your Epirb.
I would imagine Ca gets pretty hot also. But ours is a dry heat for most of the time. Long sleeve columbia style shirts with long pants, sun gloves, wide brim hat and MOZZIE NETS/Fly Veils.
And a good sense of humour.
ABOVE ALL, tell people which direction your heading be it the local police etc. Makes copies of details, car rego, phone details, etc etc expected time away for the day etc and a return time.
Again if your not been here before be prepared, dont become a statistic.
Others can post for other tips.
Good luck wish you well.

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
There is bound to be some forum members out and about in that area in April, maybe you can do a tag along with them.
Let them know where you will be staying. I might even be up that way myself, ya never know.
What are your plans for accommodation ?

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
Thanks again. Our plan is to rent a vehicle in Kalgoorlie head up to leonora. Lisa and Tony at http://www.goldtalkleonora.com.au/ have a three day class and will let us use their claims after that. My friend has just a little gold nugget experience(just coins in the park and poking around my claims in Nevada) and we need to get the lay of the land. I have an extra machine (gpx 3000 with Peter Woodward Mods)(for sale by the way)he can use. Would love to hook up with some of you out there. As far as for lodging we figured we would need to use the hotel or what ever Leonora has to offer. Not sure about camping. Depends on what we can rent in Kal. Any suggestions? Bob

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
A Leonora caravan park cabin would be a good option. All the comfort you should need, without having to buy all the ins and outs for camping. Prospectors staying in the park, hang around the fire pit each morning and evening discussing their days finds. Their mostly a friendly bunch and there will usually be someone willing to take you out with them. Leonora sees a lot of prospectors each year, but there is still gold to be found. You will find some gold if you scratch around enough. Don't expect to get rich, but expect to have a great time in a great area of Oz.

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
This is the usual type of swag, just remember to zip it up and the snakes won't crawl in and sleep with ya
And if you don't fancy doing that, the Whitehouse hotel was fairly cheap and they do meals at the bar and they did have a little restaurant out the back which was good.

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
Bob, if you are a tall bloke 6ft plus you'd need the Oz trail Mitchell king swag.
I'm 6.3 and there's plenty of room for me in that model.

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
Bob, best of luck with the big trip.
Try to have a few nights out bush under the stars, it's bloody brilliant.
Snakes shouldn't be to bad around April, although it could still be quite warm that time of the year.so best to be a bit cautious.
Most importantly we drive on the right side of the road, which is the left side not the right but it's right to us . Arhh the opposite side that you guy's drive.
Either way just dodge those big trucks and the Mexicans towing big vans, kangaroos emu's camel's brumby's and yowies.
P.s i hope of explained myself correctly
On a serious note all the best, Tony and Lisa will guide you through it all.

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
We forgot to tell ya about the wild dogs and feral cats. The buggers like chewing on ya swag at night
And the bull camel who will come into ya camp and stomp it into the ground
And watch out for the bungarra's, never run, just lay on the ground. If you stand still, they will think you are a tree and try and climb up ya and they have sharp claws
We don't have drop bears here so ya safe against them.
Apart from that lot, hope to see ya's out there.

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
On a vacation to Australia, a Texas farmer meets an Aussie farmer and starts talking to him about his farm.
The Aussie takes him to see his big wheat field, but the Texan wasn't impressed.
"We have wheat fields that are twice as large as this one," he told the Aussie.
The Aussie farmer drives him around the ranch and shows off his big herd of cattle.
"Oh, our longhorns are at least twice as big as these," the Texan bragged.
The Aussie farmer is getting frustrated when the Texan notices a herd of kangaroos hopping across a field.
"What on earth are those?" he asks.
The Aussie turns to him with an astonished look. "Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas?"

Re: 2 Yanks Planning a trip in April
Zap..... that's a old classic, bloody beauty.!!
Yeah Bob, all a bit of fun mate. I'm sure you and your mate will have a great time in the outback. And find some good gold.
pints will get you somewhere over here, if you can find a pub that serves them by April, i read the pubs are fazing the pints out in favour of the schooner.
no different, just a extra trip or 4 to the bar. Which ain't a bad thing if there's a bit of talent pouring them for ya.
Good luck
