Disused Open Cut Mines
I've seen a lot of disused open cut pits in WA but I didn't know there was this many. 1800 of the buggers and from what I've seen, most are now full of water and you can't drink it. 2 sets of rules here, one for the mining companies and one for the little guy. Guess who gets away with "blue murder" as the old saying goes.

Re: Disused Open Cut Mines
Here's some shots of a closed and fenced-off open cut about 2 k's from my home.
It was apparently operated by a mob called Tallanger Mining about 15-20 years ago.
The tailings pile in the second photo runs parallel to the Maryborough/Dunolly road and is only
about 20 metres from the road
I can't find any history of it but I'll keep trying.
Btw, my son took the photos last April

Good photo's Robert, I have driven past that many times and always wondered what the go was with that.
Too bad you don't have any info on it either.

Re: Disused Open Cut Mines
The reason for this is because the big mining companies have 2 options. Either refill the pits after they are finished with or face a multi-million dollar fine. NOW..... It is actually heaps cheaper for the mining companies just t pay the fine as to backfill these huge pits costs a fortune.
