POLICE claim to have made a breakthrough in their investigation into an organised crime syndicate importing drugs into Karratha, with the discovery of more than $3.3 million worth of drugs in a car northeast of Perth.

The drugs were allegedly hidden in five Ford Falcon automatic transmission boxes, which were found in a Victorian-registered trailer being towed by a NSW-registered Landcruiser.

Detectives from the West Pilbara and detectives from the Organised Crime Squad intercepted and searched the Landcruiser and trailer on Flynn Rd near the Great Eastern Highway at Chidlow on Wednesday.

Police say 15 sealed packages, wrapped in electrical tape, were found in the transmission boxes.

The packages contained 8kg or 32,000 tablets of MDMA, 2kg of methylamphetamine and 483g of cocaine.

The estimated street value of the drugs is $3,362,259.

Organised Crime Squad Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Annesley said it was the largest seizure he had seen during his time with the unit.

“It will have an effect on the illicit drugs trade in the Pilbara district,” he said.

Acting Det Sen Sgt Annesley said the 45-year-old man was caught in Chidlow on the Great Eastern Highway, headed towards Perth.

“Some of these drugs may have been destined for the Perth area, but it is believed they were heading for the Pilbara district,” he said.

Police believe the drugs were a part of a wider syndicate.

“Looking at the size, it’s certainly not from somebody doing a home manufacture,” Acting Det Sen Sgt Annesley said.

“This is certainly beyond that, this is a commercial quantity and it’s definitely part of an organised crime syndicate, there’s no doubt about that.

“What’s unusual about it from my perspective, is the combination of the different drugs in the seizure, normally we would find someone with just one category of drugs.

“Which leads to the fact it’s more than just someone who’s manufactured it and the means and effort gone to secrete the drugs in the transmission box certainly requires some organisation.”

There were five transmission boxes and drugs were in all of them.

A 45-year-old man from Nyngan in NSW has been charged with three counts of possessing a prohibited drug with intent to supply or sell.

He appeared in the Midland Magistrates Court today and was remanded to face court again next week.
