Re: I'm missing something
It was just a bit of levity on a Saturday morning, my sincere apologies if you don't see the humour
Melt it down and make a silver bar ? sheer madness, the coin is worth more as is, than for the silver content due to it's condition. I'm extremely glad I got my hands on some a few years back. I only paid $2 each for them, I fell sorry for the poor sod who sold them. Not A1 condition but nearly close to it

So what are they worth now Bignuggs?
I'm pretty sure that I have a couple sliding around in my sock drawer.

Re: I'm missing something
A lot of these coins got melted down when they went out of circulation, as the silver content 80% silver was worth far more then the coin.
Though a lot of aussies hauded them
I believe something to the degree of 36 million were minted, Most coins now are traded as bullion coins.
At current bullion prices the round 50c peice is worth about 11 dollars, if you find one is very good condition you could pay anything between 30 - 50 dollars for it.
Being primarly sold now as bullion you can pick these up off ebay for around the 10 dollar mark per coin, sometimes a lot cheaper.
Cheers
