Camp Fires Empty Camp Fires

Post by Bignuggs Sat 26 Nov 2011, 3:32 pm

Now I'd like to approach the subject of camp fires in the scrub. In my wanderings around the goldfields, I have found a lot of camp fires just put on the top of the ground with a circle of small rocks around them. In my opinion, totally unsafe. You might think the fire is out but believe me, under the ash is a live fire and it only takes a little wind and away it goes. I've lost a few chairs and jackets in the early days coz of this practice and I learnt real quick.
I'm a believer in diggin a fire hole. You can pour water on it when ya finished and bury it.
Sacrilege I hear you say. Yep, I've got false signals from buried fires or burnt out stumps but at least when I leave a camp I know there ain't gonna be a scrub fire.
I was pissed again, we had just listened to the eagles v geelong game and I had to drown my sorrows.

Funny use to drag rocks to make a fire place but its so easy to just dig a hole and when ya leave just scrap the dirt over the pit.

With all this rain here (NSW and WA from what i can gather) will be a high risk soon with all this new growth.

Cheers
