hi, Has anyone had any experience with pin pointers-one called MAKRO seems to tick all the boxes for me-what's your take on it? It has to have least interference from hot ground. scratch Thanks Tom.

G'day Tom

If you intend to use it on the beach or in parks
Most pinpointers have fairly good reputations .

If you intend to use it on the Goldfield some may interfere with the detector

Re best pinpointer, gold detecting only use. The question is which one has least emi in very mineral areas based on actual experience. I realize some can interfere with detector if not careful. Thank's for reply though. cheers, Tom.

EMI is not limited to mineralised areas. EMI can be anywhere depending on weather, powerlines, TV and radio transmission towers, radar installations and all sorts of electrical apparatus. I've never heard people actually complaining that their pinpointer is badly affected by EMI, although some do create their own EMI and interfere with the detector itself.

I guess you mean, what handles the mineralisation best?

The Garrett Pro Pointer seems to work pretty well in WA goldfields so I'm told but really, you only need a pinpointer once in a blue moon. I know a few guys who have them but none of them actually carry one with them.

You only really need one when your trying to locate a large nugget, in a deep hole, which unfortunately, happens only rarely.

Even in a deep hole with a decent target the range of the pin pointer is too short. I usually go and get the Whites GMT with a little 6"x4" coil and poke that down the hole. For one thing it'll give a pretty reliable iron reading but also the strength of the signal can be varied to help get right to the spot.

If your doing it right, you should be able to find the smallest bit very quickly without a pinpointer.

But for the iron junk consider a super magnet about 25 mm

Have had a Garret pinpointer for several year and still going ok. only use it for "treasure" hunting beach / parks ect. Don't use in goldfields as don't have to much of problem pinpointing targets. does interfere with my ML GPX 5000
Cheers.
