Gold fever has hit the WA Museum-Kalgoorlie-Boulder, with just under 1g of gold unearthed by a team of prospectors at the Hannan Street property yesterday afternoon.
With the museum just 50m from where Paddy Hannan found gold in 1883, manager Zoe Scott admitted she had been expecting the total of the precious metal to amount to "a pimple on a pumpkin".
However, her expectations were blown away when members of the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society discovered two whopping "pimples" in a pile of dirt left as the result of cable trenching at the museum earlier this year.
An ecstatic Ms Scott said museum staff were now buzzing with excitement over striking "Paddy's scraps", and she was also keeping an eye on everyone's fingers.
"It has been a very interesting exercise in seeing what lies beneath the museum," she said.
"The (EGHS) were so excited … they weren't expecting to discover two pieces."
Ms Scott said the discovery of the pieces of gold, weighing in at 0.33g and 0.48g respectively, underlined Kalgoorlie-Boulder's status as Australia's gold capital.
"It makes the point that Kalgoorlie is still such an ore-bearing area," she said.
"We are the Golden Mile, and the richest gold-bearing area in Australasia."
Ms Scott said the gold pieces would likely have a new home and place of honour in the museum's gold vault.
At current gold prices of $1530/oz the discovery by the EGHS comes in at almost $44 in value.
And while she was excited by the discovery, Ms Scott issued a gentle reminder to anyone looking to venture onto museum property in the hope of striking it rich that the area was government land, with no trespassing permitted.

The whole city of Kal is sitting on surface gold or what was known as the 10foot rule ground.
Just imagine whats sitting under the pubs
I wonder if they will let me dig up Hannan street, or the Federal and the Exchange and the Palace and the rest of them

There were some operators digging up the street alongside Coles supermarket in Kal today. Perhaps I should have got the detector out.
