Re: Hema 5
haven't used the navigator Ray but the mapping is first class. fellow i know did some remote trips with a dash gps system using hema maps and swear by them, very accurate. when i was out with Jase east Barwidgee . we met up with a german couple using a navigator and hema maps and their location and tracks were spot on also, they even had some old mine shaft locations loaded. it did work very well and was easy to see on the dash, one of the biggest gripe i have with a laptop. cant fault what I know about them cept haven't actually owned one.

Oneday,
They are an excellent piece of kit. My Mate and I use the Hema 5 . One of the main advantages for down lower than Meeka/Wiluna is they will take the 1-100,000 W.A Geology maps readily available from Ozi-explorer for a reasonable fee. These are very accurate and repeat with both Tengraph and Google Earth.
The Hema 5 is now replaced by the Hema 6 and 7.
The battery in ours died and we sent it back for service and new battery. It still gives trouble and cost $330 to have it serviced. In retrospect would have been better to have sacrificed it to the Goddess of Gold and bought the Hema 7.
The Tracking system is very accurate and a track you made in the morning can be picked up in the dark with pinpoint accuracy. This would be handy amongst the hills and creeks on you patch.
Also the screen changes from daylight vision to night vision as the daylight fades.
Another thing is you need a dedicated 12v plug directly connected to your battery so the Navigator does not shut down each time you turn the key off and then you have to wait for it reload.
Nit picking I know ,but............
The Hema 7 also has a larger screen which is a big advantage. I don`t know how good they would be in the Pilbara unless you can get both 1-100,000 Topo and Geology maps for that area that load via Internet Explorer.
I would caution against buying a Hema 5.
Cheers,
Driller

Tom,
It does have that feature and many more, which I haven't explored/understood yet
I still like to have my laptop as well for Geomap, GE etc.
If Crazy pops up again we'll have see who wacks him first

Re: Hema 5
the best thing I have that leaves a snail trail is a simple Tom Tom street screen--Harvey normal type gadget.cheap ones will do.
Turn it on and as soon as u drive it leaves a trail of were u have been and u can zoom in and zoom out--save locations with a name and bobs yah uncle or cousin or whatever takes yah fancy.....designed for the brain dead--and I'm the chairman.
mind u if u want to spend a few bucks then u can get GPS units from Hong Kong via flea bay for about $150 with a decent screen size.

Re: Hema 5
We have a 7" Garmin Street Pilot that cost about $2500 with maps and mounts in 2006. I installed it for the pommy client who bought the Hummer I have sitting in my workshop. It's been a great machine but the internal battery leaked and damaged the circuit board. Sometimes it takes a fit so I carry a Nuvi as a backup but when I replace it I think the Hema 7 looks like the best option. The great thing about the big Garmin is that when you're navigating to a destination it still shows the minor roads and topo features on the map. The later Nuvi blanks out the minor roads and just shows the route taken.

Re: Hema 5
the good thing about the Hema Maps is that they have had people in the field re routing these outback destinations and from what i have seen on the hema 7 --they r very accurate...i am not sure if u need to hard wire it to the battery so when u turn the key off u dont loose anything..???
is the Hema 5 worth anything??

Re: Hema 5
it has been suggested that I look into an ipad--and simply download the maps from hema or a similar site, for a cost and bobs yah uncle--apparently they also come with a dash mount, built in camera, still and videos etc...
to many options.

"...i am not sure if u need to hard wire it to the battery so when u turn the key off u dont loose anything..???"
Oneday,
You dont "loose" anything ,you just have to start up again, wait for the topo maps to come up and then change to geology maps and then find and open the one you were using.
Down here you cant leave your vehicle in the bush without locking it so its much easier to have it plugged into a hot plug so it doesn`t shut down.
I did say it was nitpicking..........Nyuk!....Nyuk...Nyuk.....
Cheers,
Driller.
