Am interested in identifying this diagram symbol and why there is a dotted line included?

my take on that pete is the symbol is whatever you are powering eg motor, light etc
the dashed circuit would be a secondary circuit ie the controller can control 2 different items

I agree with Tom, primary and auxiliary circuits for a lamp or motor.

could terminal 4 and 3 be the low power feed to the relay ON/OFF switch.

when active/ON main power Terminal 1 feeds 5.

As it is 240V, is it a hard wired switch or a 3 pin plugin ? what is it actually being used for.
I've got hard wired digital timer switches in the house for lights. I'll see if I kept the wiring diagram.

Basically its a wiring diagram of din mounted single module relay (usually rated to 10A)

- Relay contacts are normally always drawn in electrical wiring diagrams de-energized.

- The drawing shows that the contacts 4 & (5 or 3) and operating coil are rated to 240Vac

- The relay has no contact continuity through terminals 4 (Common ) & 5
(Normally Open) until the operating coil terminals 1 & 2 are energized by 240Vac.

- There will be continuity through terminals 4 (Common) & 3 (Normally Closed)  when operating coil terminals 1 & 2 are de-energized.

- Therefore, operating coil energised or switched load is represented as a lamp on the solid line and a de-energized, load (represented by the dotted lines as an alternate option for another circuit also rated up to 240Vac or a failure indication of  the operating coil to operate the relay)

Thanks for the input, the timer is a Legrand 03705 replacement for the 03700 that has energised my 3phase bore pump starter for past 20 years.
The old one does not have circuit 5, hence the query.

Yeah, I thought that circuit looked familiar.
So any Legrand (my choice), Hagar, Clipsal, HPM, MEM will do the same job and can look very similar.
The clock power on terminals 1 & 2, the clock operates the closing relay coil internally.
The timer closes the contact at programmed times, the opposite contact for reverse logic.
It is better to buy a relay switching timer than a triac (solid state) one from my experience and the lithium battery backed up ones over capacitive backed up ones that don't really like harsh treatment (voltage spikes from lightning etc)

Clear description, the old 03700 was a capacitor model, the 03705 has a 3032 Li battery.
Interpreting the program instructions are the next hurdle.

Better get a move on now the cats out of the bag before the Feds rock up.......

Contacted HPM Legrand and asked them could they supply operating instructions?
Can you believe their email response was, the Model No: I supplied must be one the supplier (Lawrence & Hansen) uses because 03705 is not on their books.
The timer clearly has Model: Legrand 03705 stencilled on the unit and their reply email was hpmlegrand, go figure.
And they wonder why more and more of us are shopping online.

3700 Programming Instructions pdf

I already have the program instructions for the 03700 and yes, used a pen for programming over the past years, however, it is physically different to the 03705 as is the programming HOWEVER after much frustration managed to program it in the comfort of the lounge chair with it running in Li battery power.
Is now installed and in 240VAC power mode and switching in the 3 phase bore pump contactor and water is now pumping Tuesdays, Fridays & Sundays.

BTW: They wanted $US19.00 to download the superseded instructions. Should I contact them and try and sell them instructions for the timer they claim they do not have?
