good vech to pick

on our last trip had a 1989 4.2 duel fuel patrol which did well although had a few bumps along the way :)

Is there any good cheap 4x4 type which anyone would suggest? I was considering getting a defender, giving it a refresh and importing it but its a lot of hassle!

due the car import laws in oz its much more expensive than the uk for vechs!
