Re: any recommendations ?
Theres some questions you have to ask yourself.
How much to you want to spend.
How often will you use it.
Does it come with computer software.
Do you want colour or gray scale screen
I just got rid of a garmin60 (grayscale screen) the 60s (updated version of the 60) had the colour screen but I didn't like the 60. I'll be looking for something like a touch screen (colour). For me personally I would find it easier to use.
I'll be looking at one of the Garmin Oregan models and they are about $400
cheers

Re: any recommendations ?
Be careful Cliff the Garmin Oregon models are now mostly obsolete stock and no software or firmware updates available.
Your better off looking at the new Garmin Dakota range,it superseded the Oregon models..
Lojay - the main thing as a new GPS user is just getting one that you can use and understand with ease mate, no good having all the fruit on one if you cant use it easily.
I have been using the Garmin eTREX H ($120) for years now and its the easiest to use and bullet proof.
Once you start moving into the more expensive models they get more confusing to use for a new GPS user.

Re: any recommendations ?
There's the problem with Garmin. They come out with a new model every 5 minutes so the one ya buy is obsolete.
The etrex is cheap and easy to use. It's all personal choice what you want.

Re: any recommendations ?
I'm with Pete, been using one of the Garmin E TREX ($120) for years, except back then I paid nearly $400
for it. All you really need, in my book.

Re: any recommendations ?
Yes, get an Etrex, not particulary accurate but close enuff. Check for accuracy before ya buy. And I don't care what the rest of ya's say.
I'd rather be within at least 5 to 10 metres, not half a mile.
Even the garmin60 which was crap got me closer than 10 metres. Etrex wont do that and I've seen it in operation.
Cost+How many times will I use it+what accuracy do you want
your choice.

To true Inhere, combine that with Google earth and Landgate map viewer and you have all you need.
Dont forget when using Google earth to look at areas prior to heading out,Google earth stores that closeup view
in your temp folder so you can use Google earth without a connection to look at those areas and get coords
while out bush, just make sure you go to that area while at home and its stored for you.
Note - dont clear temp files or run a disc cleaner before you leave or those Google views will be cleared,
if in Kal go to macca's car pk and use their free wifi connection.

I'm adding more to this coz i'm annoyed by it all. Now I'm a white shadow (anglo/saxon and no dark in me) who never gets lost, how can ya get lost ? Tell me, how the f##k can ya get lost ? and why do ya need a GPS ? if ya can't find an area ya walked, give it away.

Hi Cliff,
Well if you know where a reef is located at one spot, and you know where the same reef is 1k or more away, you can mark those points on your gps and detect the reef line in between and beyond. Sometimes it can be really hard to find where the reef is running in the areas where it has washed away from or sediment has been deposited on top.

Re: any recommendations ?
Everyone is relying to much on GPS. Providing ya not blind, you have 2 eyes in ya head , use them.
