Hey Peaky,
I don't think you can do enough reseach, but when it becomes a pain and not enjoyable, give away, otherwise it will take the enjoyment out of the whole exercise and let's face it you still have to walk over that beautiful yellow stuff, all the research dosen't give any garrantees
Otherwise, just ask Pete he'll share where to find it Haha!

Funny thing is Pete, Peaky and me are always out bush together and have never come home without gold or
even go a single day without it, so thats why i follow Peaky hahaha oh sh*t he's reading this
Not much research's needed if goin to an established flogger but if actually prospecting new dirt ya cant
do enough i reckon, otherwise its like havin a socket set and only 2 bloody sockets, ya gonna have loose nuts
Biggest research is looking on www.boozle.com.au to find the cheapest tinnies
Last trip Me n Peaky n Burnsy did was a cracker, the others got stuck in asap but me n Peaky also got
stuck in, to the tinnies that is and you soon know when ya feeling lethal and rig up, think it was after
8 or 9 red deaths that day :rolf: straight on the gold but.

Funny that
Funny you say that I was just thinking that we have not had a miss yet
Is that because we think out of the square or we are dumb asses and only go to places that people think look sh*t
Dumb in some peoples eyes !!!!!!
I love looking at google earth and just picking darker ground.
Then I zoom in and see if I can see any old diggings
Then I will go to the Land Gate site and find the same spot and look some more
The best way to prove a sopt is to walk over it but I do Love the research.
Finding gold after all of that is more rewarding

Re: How Much Do you Do
46 people read this but no comment ???? ( apart from 2 )
Not hard to give a coment or two and help the people who think it just jumps out of the ground at you
Not asking for people to give up spots but just different ways that we all go about it
For us that can not go out for 6 weeks at a time it is good to read about how others go about it

now ya got ya 3rd comment from MEEEEEEEE I get to spend a lot of time on a computer lookin at geo maps, trove, old bulletins,
tengraph (hate it), google earth, landgate maps plus have kept inside my head stuff a geo told me years ago.
I just gotta stir the driver to get passionate about searching again so we can use the knowledge, gotta get a 5000 also.

Re: How Much Do you Do
There is definitely real satisfaction in finding a spot you have researched and getting gold. Even when other detector holes are present, I don`t get discouraged, I ask myself, what machine did he use and how good is he, then I check his holes. When I was there in May four times I found gold in old holes at three different locations

Re: How Much Do you Do
With so much of the good gold country tied up in Private Property here in N.S.W,there aint much use doing too much homework. Most property owners these days arent keen to let anyone onto their land, and alot of the bigger properties are now being divided up into hobby farms.
What really gives me wood is diggings that produced big Gold, that have a bit of Junk scattered around.
Most opperators will give up if they are digging too much trash or walk/swing faster if the trash is thick.
Deeper ground gives the smart opperator a chance to find those spots where the wash layer isnt beyond reach. No good swinging where the wash/clay layer or bedrock is 2+ mtrs down, something that Newbies take time to learn. Also reading the ground make-up as you dig a deep target will normally tell you if the whole lot has been turned over before.
You blokes in WA would be seeking that Virgin run, which is everyones goal. I reckon when I lob over,I would like to find some old workings that gave up some big chuncks and have plenty of surface junk about. I would rather dig 100 bits of crap and have the chance of pinging a multi Oz piece than search around and not find bugger all in a weeks swinging.

Re: How Much Do you Do
I have found you got to think outside the box, the easyer the info is availible the for an area, the more flogged it is.
gotta be smarter than the average bear
problem is there are alot of cunning old prospectors out there...

Re: How Much Do you Do
That sounds like the goods to me F K.
I have lost count of the times where after removing a 4 inch nail,I pinged a bit of gold right underneath it.
A few months back I dug a small bit at 4 inches. 2nd and 3rd targets out of the hole were Boot tacks and there were 3 more small nuggs under them.
Most of our best Patches allways hide the biggest Nuggets till after all the surface junk is gone. The bonus of taking the trash is you can return with the next latest n greatest and listen for those soft deep sounds you missed before.

Re: How Much Do you Do
Once saw a bloke who had made and was using an electro magnet.
It looked just like wire wound around a broom handle and connected to a car battery (roughly)
It seemed to pick up all the surface junk and then he was detecting the cleared areas...

Re: How Much Do you Do
For those that have limited hunting time (me),
I try to start on a known patch and either expand
the edges of it or look for similar ground.
This has gotten me over gold almost every time.
If I have lots of time then it is straight to research
and Google Earth (and any other sat maps I can find).
Knowledge of unfamiliar areas is hard-won and sometimes a local can save you hours and days of mistakes.
I have often been given great tips by local prospectors.

How Much Do you Do
I agree Flackmagnet when i was full on with it , the best results were hitting good recent finds & geo mapping the line & jumping ahead , still reckon any minelab 2100 or later will get 90% of the gold on a new run. The 4500 & 5000 owners i know arent bringing the lumps at depth. There seems to be lots of small bits , fare enounugh , but the best gold results i know are coming from new areas , not the result of technology.

Re: How Much Do you Do
I agree albo.
The big pieces will, in most cases, be found by any good detector
unless they are at "expert operator depth."
I personally do not think the lower number of (published),
big finds by 4500 and 5000 operators is due to a lessor technology
I just think the easier-reached areas with their bigger pieces of gold
have been gone over by the many ranks of detectorists who have gone before us.
I know from personal experience that if you go over a good-sized piece
in an area that has not been thoroughly prospected, anyone could find it.
But the deep ones that still remain,
both in the covered areas and the areas yet to be discovered,
will be the territory for an experienced and careful detector operator.
It has pretty much always been that way as you have intimated.
best wishes
