why dont we produce a book DWAG

sure there r others out there but heck lets b original..I have been workin on this idea for some time now so I'd thought I'd share..

I'm sure we can find a few expert photographers around..struff theres plenty of photos on here..

someone with the gift of the proverbial gab and who has a nack of putting words together to make it interesting..

index could include headings like ..

detecting

Caravan parks

Common grounds

safety devices gps-etc

tools of the trade

4x4 tips

solar and batteries

u get the drift...add ideas if u want--

Hijacking thread a little, but in the 21st century would a dvd not be better?
With the book aswell. So you can read the book on the road when your camping, and watch the dvd before your trip to get all fired up..
I would love to see a decent prospecting dvd released. I know theres some awsome characters in this community who would shine on the big screen..
Lets face it other than American Gold shows we have nothing...

dont care what format it takes just as long as we get together and do something..
reckon I could get some nice girls to go bush with or maybe not that would have to be an 'xgx' rated vid..

It’s an interesting idea but it’s not something done in 5 minutes. So here’s some things to think about.
1. It takes money to produce, the forum as an entity doesn’t have it and I know I certainly don’t but I can’t speak for the rest of the management team. So where is money coming from ?
2. If you make comments about caravan parks and roadhouses etc you would have to give an honest assessment. You then leave yourself wide open to be sued for defamation as there are some that need to be bulldozed and turned into car parks as they are absolute shitholes.
3. How would you distribute a book or DVD ? give it away free ? I think not.
4. You would have to recoup the outlay, make a profit even. Then you go down the road of a business name, ABN and GST and the bloody Tax Office. I certainly don’t have the time or patience anymore to be dealing with that.

That’s just a few things to think about but don't let me stop anyone from having a go. I'm sure our members would be glad to contribute photo's and information.

Business name--PILBARA PROSPECTING SUPPLIES KARRATHA--all rego ready to go.

When describing potential parks that I will leave up to the owners of the parks they might want to sponsor half a page or vid of the park.

distributing--I thought a good way would be with all retail outlets when they sell tectors or gear..there r other more productive ways as well but thats another deal..

cost -well have to work that out later--but has to be very affordable..

every subject will have a sponsor or two..thus a revenue stream via advertising. I think this side of the deal is endless plus its a very targeted audience.

If you are talking about a "guide to prospecting" then sure its something i have considered. However rather than a published book, a website detailing this as well as a pdf version might be the better way to do.

monetising that however becomes more complicated

This has already been by somebody in WA. I can say now, it's not on the cards but a book of photo's and the cost to produce it will be investigated.

This project is dead. I took a chance and called a well known WA author who has published some excellent books about old Fremantle.
Minimum cost would be in the vicinity of $100,000 and expect to lose at least 3 years of your life with research, designers, publishers, printers, legal fees and the list goes on.
END OF STORY

CANT FIND gold cant write a book
struff no hope for anyone--
it was just an idea.

I think your idea has merit, I don't think it would cost anywhere near 100 grand, if that was the case there would not be so many books out there.
I think you need to make a very comprehensive checklist on what you want to acheive from this project then work out what you need to acheive your goals, build a network of helpers & get it going, maybe worth looking into doing a CD instead of a paperback.

One thing I really hate doing is wasting my precious time and it is precious as I get older. I really don't care if people believe the $100,000 figure or not but if you want to know all about it, phone a man called John Dowson (he's in the phone book for Fremantle), thats the approx figure it cost to get one of his books on the shelves and it only contains old black & white photo's with a small amount of written commentary. But what would he know, he's only published a few excellent books. I should have known better than to call him, how stupid can I get.
This has been discussed with the management group and it doesn't matter if it's a book, DVD or CD, This forum will not be attempting such a project in the fore'seeable future.
