Old Bottles. Empty Old Bottles.

Post by pilbara junky Thu 25 Jul 2013, 11:00 am

Hey Everyone.

I was just wondering if anyone also collects bottles that they find when they are out and about and how they find the information on them and the appraisals. I know for a fact some bottles can be valued at sometimes more than the gold you find.

For instance I found an oldish beer bottle the other day. Had embossed on it some icons and said basically "This bottle remains the property of The West Australian Glass Manufacturers PTY LTD"

Looking them up they only were in production from 1964 to 1972. (Some of you may remember them haha). Some I found are selling for $30 a bottle.

But yeah just wondering were people get their info from and find out their worth etc. I know theres some avid collectors out there. Sometimes you stuble upon many great things. Some of real value.

Hey mate- ive picked up a couple over the last couple of years, always wandered if they were worth something??? I got told about a couple of bottle dumps where there are thousands of them, most of them broken unfortunately, apparently they were the sites of some old time hotels????

Re these Old Ozi Bottles in the Gold fields Here's a Tip ( pardon tha pun thar ) ~!"
Gold field Bottles where there were Chinese Prospectors & if ya read GOLD  & Ghosts the Ozi books on the Gold fields they state there woz About 125,000 or so in Queensland & I Know this is WA.
So try find out how many Chinese in the WA Gold fields from the 1800's ? . Try Perth Library 1st & maybe their WEB pages or try WA Newspapers Archives online.
Antique Chinese Bottles will Sell in China or in Australia at any of the WEB listed Auctions that sell Chinese Antiques ( forget ebay ) your Looking to make $ not give it Away ! . Try and find a Ozi Auction thats lists its Antique stock on Live auctioneers , TheSaleRoom.com , or Artfact.com all sell antiques { Chinese Agents in the U.S.A Troll these WEB auctions Seeking Valuables for Wealthy Chinese collectors in China. 80,000 New Millionaires in China in the last 1.5 years. RE old 1800's to 1920's OZI BEER Bottles with Embossing IF you collect say 50 -80 & can take Great pictures of the Embossing then Try selling *International Antique WEB Auctions in America or Europe & Target say Beer collectors ..........You might be surprised How Much $$$$$$$$$$$ you can make if you do it RIGHT. We are All only what we experience & thats a Fact.

I am in the Antique business and export globally from Japan & Read a Lot on the WEB about auctions around the World.

Collectors collect all manner of Things ! ........these Beer Bottles would Look Great in a display case with natural light from the Rear morning sun afternoon sun in a Bar ....Country Pub in Ireland or Scotland UK makes the ambience of the interior warm and inviting & *Interesting for Drinkers.

I think the most I saw this kind of Beer bottle collection sell for was $9,500 or so maybe ten years ago somewhere in the UK there was about 60 embossed Beer bottles.
So there is some demand for them & IF you have such a collection you need to Photograph with Digi camera with Back Lighting make em Look spectacular which aint hard as they mostly do anyway if you appreciate the Artistic work involved & skills in that embossing and bottle making. you then need to find the RIGHT auction that has *connections eg client lists for such collectables & also this auction must WEB list on at least 4 -6 WEB auctions for Global Exposure for the auction and List at least 10 -14 Days prior to auction Date so buyers can source $ if they dont have Enough $ to buy. All this aint hard IF you have the Right auction, thats the Hard part of the exercise. Maybe later this year I will have my own WEB auction and will offer my services to Members of this forum to sell their finds Gold Nuggets bottles relics from the gold fields etc. Lucas

There is actually a NED KELLY Bar or PUB in Ireland so a collection of antique Ozi Beer bottles would make Great Decor for their BAR or PUB ......I would source other NED KELLY Bars and Pubs there are 4-5 known around the world one in Germany too I think I read about ~!" ........Speaking of Bars my IT specialist I was drinking with just prior to him heading off to Switzerland to commit suicide took me to a Irish Bar West of Kobe & we had both Drunk plenty prior to our arrival. After ordering I peered around the Gloom & through the clouds of ubiquitous Smoke haze & started to feel decidedly uneasy. Much like a hunter thats become the Hunted ~ I felt eye's upon me through the Gloom ! .........Gawd the shocking Horror of it HIT me ..........its an Irish Gay Bar. I know Bignuggs has House house rules re this forum so I am unable to share my other unspeakable Thoughts with Members right now.

I,ve always thought a wander done the old Hedland - marble bar railway line would be worth alook for some old bottles .apparently they use to lob em out of the train ,on the trip .I reckon occasionally they,d land in a spinny bush and roll onto the flats . Out of the way of the bushfires.
anudder 1 of those things .gunna do. half the fun would be finding the railway line.

sorry Mark I got called out to work on that Saturday and couldnt make it. the scrapers breaking bottles make sense when you see all the broken bottles with their necks knocked off, a shame realy, some are beautifully embossed and coloured glass, worth good money. the ginger beer jugs are rare and valuable but its the Chinese old snuff jars and table ware that is the prize. i will sent that link to my mate, he keeps pestering me on where to get them valued.
cheers buddy

May stand corrected here however feel sure I read somewhere that the Chinese were not allowed to prospect on NT & WA goldfields. If they did manage to travel here they were restricted to growing vegetables to supplement the diggers basic diet of salted meat, tinned fish.
There was a lot of ill feeling on the East coast and an act was passed in the late 1800's restricting the number of new Chinese arrivals. This restriction was partly overcome by landing them in SA and they hoofed it the 400 or so miles to the East coast gold rushes.
It would be a very rare find if Chinese artifacts/glass ware were found in WA.

Found the rubbish tip at Nannine back in the 80's and uncovered many "torpedo bottles" Nannine Cordial Company and another I can't recall. These bottles had a marble in the neck. Unfortunately all the bottles found were damaged.
Did find a copper coated miniature kangaroo and in 2012 I finally had it gold plated.
Nannine the first town in the Murchison.

I WOULD SAY THE CHINESE DID MAKE IT TO OUR "GOLD FIELDS" in numbers coz of the number of round shafts that u come across out in the paddock.

the chinese use to dig round shafts so the spirits couldnt hide in the corners and cause them grief. the european workers dug the common square shaft.

G'Day Oneday,
Don't think there would be many round holes in WA dug by the Chinese, maybe an Ozzie copy? :-) (Now that's a turn about)
Chinese stats here.

Found a couple of old milk bottles when over the west, being one of those that keeps anything interesting or that may be valuable the made the trip back, looked them up on Google, Perth dairy from around 50s. collectable item ?? Put one on Ebay, auction made $3. I had put postage at $6.50. Had to go away unexpectedly before auction ended, rang and told the missus to post it, its on the bench with the packaging I said. she went to PO and bought box and wrap which with postage came to $13-50  Rolling Eyes  Even the gold I found went from around $1800 now to around $1200, but at least still a profit cheers
PS still have the wrapping that I took the bottle to post office in prior to listing to get postage price. Wonder if I should put the other one on, at the same outcome using my packaging I would only be $2, out of pocket. scratch .
