Coils I use Empty Coils I use

Post by Bignuggs Mon 14 Nov 2011, 12:05 pm

I've got what I think is a good selection of coils that I use with my extreme and I'm a believer in coils for soils. By that I mean, depending on the ground I'm walking depends on the coil I'll use.

1 x ML 15x12 commander semi ellip DD (bugger of a coil without good power supply)
2 x ML 11" round DD
1 x coiltek 16" round mono
1 x coiltek goldstalker 14x9 ellip mono
1 x coiltek goldstalker 14x9 ellip mono blitz series (new, haven't had the chance to use it yet)
1 x coiltek goldstalker 16" round mono

My personal preference is the 14x9 goldstalker, I reckon its a brilliant little coil. Haven't tried the nuggetfinder range yet but I hear they are good. But it all comes down to how much money can ya spend on gear. I like to be prepared as I found out on a trip to the Laverton area I did some months back.
Some of the ground was hard as concrete and I found the 14x9 was the only coil that could get thru.
Found some softer ground and the 16" round did an excellent job of finding "junk". Razz
Would be interested to hear what other ppl are using and what their favourite is.

cheers

Coils I use Empty Re: Coils I use

G'day Bignuggs and all, my coil range consists of the following :-

11" commander DD - used rarely
11" commander mono - used 90% of the time
16" goldstalker - used a bit, I like this coil but is a tiny bit touch sensitive
16" nugget finder - used a bit, its the old white spoked type
18" nugget finder - used in the deeper ground, also a white spoked type
17x9 coiltek AI - used to get near those emi sources like under power lines and electric fences.

Interesting to note that the deepest holes that I have ever dug was with the 11 DD in pretty much factory presets, both digs were about 1200mm deep both times to dig up miners buckets.

Will be interesting when I get back to that spot to go over it with some other coils.

Cheers

G'day GS,

nice to see I'm not alone in having a wide selection. I'm not really a fan of the ML 11" DD round, personal choice I guess.
As long as ya getting the targets thats the main thing but I could do without diggin for buckets lol! I prefer diggin up old horse shoes, its great fun, not Razz

My Arsenal

Elliptical:

Coiltek 10x5 Joey Mono
Coiltek 10x5 Jey DD
Coiltek 14x9 Goldstalker Mono
coultek 17x10 Mini UFO Mono
Coiltek 17x11 Ai
Coiltek 21x27 Ai (v/lge for lakes)

Round:

Minelab 11" Mono (80 % used)
Minelab 11" DD (Never used)
Coiltek 14" Ai

Probe:

Garrett Pro Pointer.

As you can see i mainly use elliptical coils, that wa up until i got the 5000,
now i mainly use the Minelab Commander 11" Mono supplied with it, i'm a firm
believer in that Minelab have tweeked that coil up a fair bit..

I have sold most of my coils i didnt like or use much for my Extreme.
I only have a 14x9 and 14x9 blitz ( on loan)
And a coil i bought from Pete... Its about 8x5ish Nuggetfinder.
I love it for sensitivity, i pulled it apart, and filled it with resin to stop the bump sensitivity..
Sold my 350 mono, 24x12, 11DD as i didnt like them.
I did however have an 11 mono on load from a 5000 and loved it very much in hot ground...

Hi,

My coil selection;

the two 11" coils supplied from Minelab with my 5000, mono and DD.
a Joey mono which even after years of heavy hard use is a very hot coil.
a 14X9 NuggetFinder Advantage, the coil I put on for every new area I try.
a 17" eliptical NuggetFinder Advantage a great coil when used in the right conditions, surprisingly sensitive.

I have not used the stock 11" round mono coil but starting this next series of trips out
I plan on getting to know it, I hear from many good hunters that this coil
may be the best of all of them.

I hope to purchase an 18" round NuggetFinder Advantage...that is about the biggest coil
I can spend a day swinging (using a Hipstick of course).

Hi Flak

Good Coil the Commander 11" Mono, i think you will get a pleasant surprise when
you give it a run.
I would have to say its the only coil i have used on my 5000 that i feel is
totaly matched up to the new Smooth class of timings, the depth is very very good for a coil of that size and the sensitivity is mind blowing.

Now if only Minelab would release a lightweight version of the commander
series i would be as happy as a pig at the trough 🐷 🐷 oink oink Razz Razz

I agree, if minelab produced a lightweight coil you would never see anything other than a commander coil on the shaft of my weapon. (I mean detector :geek: )

And it may just be a project in the wind if some of the chatter i hear is true Shocked
Im with you Gpx imagine a 11x7" lightweight commander sniffer,or a 15x12 lightweight DeepSeeker, even a 18" round Spoked Commander.

In reality those very coils might and could spark off a new Modern Goldrush
even more intense than a new model could. " Listnin Minelab Shocked "....

Jo (the Minister for Finance) and I have had quite a few Coiltek, NF and Commander coils over the years.
Now, we both use NF 12" round Advantage monos about 99% of the time. They go plenty deep enough for us ol' f#rts. I unearthed a scout buckle at a measured 28" not long ago.
I'll use the Commander 10" mono as supplied with the 5000-it was a good one-occasionally and the Commander DD under power lines.
I'd like to try the new solid 12" NF too.
I agree about the Commanders. If they go on a diet, I'll be using them too.

Robert

Btw, has anyone had any good/bad reports about the Nugget Tech stuff?

Ive got a NT 18x12 Mono, not a bad coil actually, it runs smooth & deep, and sens is good on the 5, and
tuff as an irish navvy.

have GP3000

have:
coiltek 11''DD
coiltek 14''DD
coiltek 14'' pro elite DD
minelab 11"DD
minelab 11''mono
minelab 10"X5'' DD

Used coiltek 11'' DD nice and quiet
coiltek 14'' pro elite great but hard to pinpoint
minelab 11""mono used 75% of detecting time.

I am planing to use 14''pro elite from now on most of the time.(and 11'' mono minelab for the rest).
Was told this 2 coils are great on gp3000.
Thinking of buying 10"x5" mono.
Any other coil suggestion for this detector?

GPX 4500

Commander 11" DD used once didn't like it.
Commander 11" mono used most of the time and has found some yellow stuff.
Commander 18" mono occasionally use it and have found a few old musket balls.
Coiltek 10" x 5" mono occasionally use it and has found some yellow stuff.
Nugget Finder 14" x 9" mono used it once and found some yellow stuff but it was a bit noisy compared to the Commanders.

All the coils excel at finding junk.

Found an aluminium rectangle with "DICKHEAD" stamped on it at about 8" deep. Ran the coil over the hole and got another signal and after about 2" more got a .97g piece. I should thank whoever went to the trouble of planting the aluminium for leaving 50 bucks with it.

For some cruel reason the "Dickheads" seem to be attrackted to me, and i'm not talkin aluminium
ones either Razz Razz
Hope Santa brings me a Dickhead BAT & a FKWT filter for chrissy, that'l fix em, cheers

Dream on Pete. It ain't ever gonna happen.

I recall Tony Mills telling me that he and a mate found half a bucket full of "Dickhead" tokens.
