yep, i tried it Ray and it almost doubles the depth of the minelab pin pointer Stu

this is a bloody good idea as well..
a simply proceedure --either its on or its not

may be you should try this out with your gpx use a small nugget taped to the shaft
funny if it worked

no ,i haven't try it. we are moving house at the moment so every thing is pack away.
i find it hard to believe it worked on the pin pointers,but can see the logic.
im sure someone will try it.hope they post a result

Gday Fellas
Ran into an older guy in the bush east of Mt Magnet a couple of years ago. Seemed like a decent, smart sort of fella. Invited us back to his camp for smoko and we all had a yarn.
He had a piece of gold (about 3gms) epoxied on to the top of his coil. Reckoned it was his lucky bit and that it brightened up the detector. Thought, hello, bit of a nutter here and left him to it. Maybe I should've taken a bit more notice?

there is usually away around problems with a bit of thought
you could make a bamboo tripod mounted to the coil , keeps it central and a certain distance from the coil,
just a thought. first you would need to see if the idea worked. im still skeptical.

I'm the original skeptic with stuff like this but after seeing that pinpointer episode, next time I'm out I'm going to slide a small nuggy down the shaft towards the coil and then tape it at the appropriate distance and give it a go over a previously found target. Maybe even a five cent piece will do the trick.

There's a well known guy on youtube who does "Air" tests to his modified detectors with a fixed mounted coil. Maybe you can do the same at home.
Now there's a thought, I gotta check a coil I haven't used in years. Lets do some tests guys and see what we get.
It'll be interesting to see what happens. Maybe even get a short vid clip of the test you do.

once u have dug a hole and your target is getting angry at u for getting to close then its time to turn the detector off and use the pin pointer..

trust me its a lot easier.

Tape/glue any metal to the shaft or coil of a PI detector will only de-tune it. It will also cause the detectors front end to die prematurely.


You people need to go out detecting more often.  

It seem to me that the pin-pointer needs to have it's threshold move up, it is too far in the silent mode.

I tried this last night and it effectively doubled the Pro Pointers distance from the target and even got a faint signal three times as far away.
I wonder though if this might negate the usefulness of this device in actually pin pointing the target. I used it last night on the way home and it worked perfectly in standard form (one hour old).
Sandra had me dig a 400mm deep hole in roadbase and the little White's was still quacking like a stuck duck. The pinpointer soon showed that I'd missed the bit of barbed wire just off the side of the bottom of the hole. Without it I might still be digging.....

Here's a suggestion for those who would like to feed the need to modify their devices.  

Grab a short length of a heavy plastic zipper with a metal runner from a tent, sleeping bag or jacket (preferably not your own). Tape it to the side of your pinpointer and when you feel the desire for in the field modification just slide the metal runner to the desired position and go point it where it feels best. 

An overlooked bit to this mod is that if you add more sensitivity to them, you also add undesirables...like falsing.

Get the Whites TRX and be done with it......it outperforms the others hands down. Tested in WA this season gone and like the others...it will cause interference if its in the field of the coil.
The 18" mono has a mighty big field, but keping the pin-pointer in the back pack for those deep digs saw no interference. Small coils i got away with hanging it off my chest strap.
No problem with mineralization tho as the TRX has a ratcheting feature which simply balances out any falsing. Very fast an effective pointer, however most of the time i simply used the old fashioned way of retrieving my winnings.  
Bought mostly for coining, but worked well in the prospecting environment.

The little falcon detector has a adjustable copper ring for sensitivity.
