i bought some hankook all terrain for my 08 prado didnt do much research but they looked good.last week got two sidewall punctures.went and got some toyo mud terrain today and when they took the old tyres off.which still had 70% tread i was amazed to see all the tyres had large splits forming on the sudewalls which is lucky they havnt blown out.i always have correct pressures i an very dissapointed but you get what pay for. And research helps will see how my new tyres go

An expensive item on 4x4 these days. lot of hype from all the Tyre companies but have they ever tried testing the suckers in the WA country side and scrub. Doubt it.
But having said that, I always had bridgestones and never had any trouble.

Expensive hobby. Now with the wider profile tyres and tubeless, I can honestly say. I don't like it but thats me. I only had standard rims (split rims which people don't like now) and standard tubed tyres. They didn't like dirt to much coz at high speed ya fishtailed a bit but who needs to do high speed on dirt roads.

G'day leinsterlad , I had hankook tyres on a van and they were great.
I think you must have bought very old stock, to have splits forming in the sidewalls of
any of the tyres sold these days.
Did you check the writing on the sidewalls to see when the tyres were made? Wink

Hey Leinster Lad
I've got Toyos, and they have been great although I've had some stakes go through the sidewall
The problem is those sharp stumps would go through just about anything.
You really have to keep your eyes open and slow down
Years ago ya didn't hear much about staking sidewalls, I wonder if that was because they were "Textile radials with 6 or 8 ply walls?
Dunno I'm not an expert

yeah the hankooks were from 2011 on marker, just bad luck i guess ,the tyres i got are a 10 ply side wall compared to the hankook 2 ply,did the the trip home today happy with the way they handled ,normal mud terrain noise but time will tell as they wear how they go[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] your right nothing will stop a puncture if you dont drive with caution ,i just want to try have the best tyres i can to help it all be in my favour

I run cooper's tyre's STMAXX on my 200 series and have had no probs haven't had a puncture yet got heavy duty sidewall's and I drive thru alot of bad country only downside is they are a little pricey, at the end of the day everyone has a different opinion it's a trial and error thing to find out what works for you.
Good luck mate.

i got 33 mickey thompsons on my 80 series go good and look so pretty. lol! staked the sidewall on 3 so far this season, Rolling Eyes

best option for reducing staked sidewalls is split rims and skinney cross plys

Just bought myself a new set of KM2 Mud Terrains and alloy rims today for the big trek west next year. Although not cheap, they are highly recommended. Time will tell !

Cheers,

Its all about the thickness of the side walls, tread is tread out bush but
spiking is the main killer of tyres in the WA bush, and 99% go thru the sides.

I've done over 40,000ks on Hankook A/Ts and have not yet had a puncture.
I do heaps of offroad driving in the Triangle-I mean making my own tracks thru the bush over any number of sharp bits of quartz, tree stumps etc. The secret to my success is luck. Lucky I drop my tyre pressures before I go in.

Works for me

One thing I found here in the West is the sneaky little stumps ya drive over or even some of the roads. the stumps could be just poking outa the ground or just under the surface and it'll be like a knife going thru butter. The same for the roads, loose rock sharp as buggery.
