Bit of a bogus report that one, Omeo is in Vic and so is the Tambo River both east of Melb.
Good job the newspaper reporter didnt get lost with directions like that..

Got that right Pete. I caught hundreds of bream in the Tambo back in the '70's. It was a great place. It's probably a suburb of Sale by now.

Um, sorry about that Was searching Southern Cross WA and came across it. Can I change the heading to Vic members ??

Thats the area I grew up in.
Much of that high country, west to east, is a basalt covering over ancient river systems, all with gold.
In the early days there was much hydraulic mining done around the Dargo - Omeo region.
A bloke I knew (Don Dewar) had a jaw crusher plant on the lower Tambo producing road metal. He ran his fines/tailings over an about 90' sluice lined with coir matting.
I reckon he did as well from gold as he did from the road metal.
When the highway was being upgraded from the late 50's I did some dozer work around Club Terrace. Was always hoping I would push the cap off a reef loaded with gold.
Never happened, but there were quite a few old reef mines in the area which produced decent returns.

Off to Adelaide this arvo, and they've only got Brown Mullet in the Torrens River the river's polluted as all the Brown Mullet float on the surface Dead easy to catch ifya wanna
