ford explorer timing gear
has anyone attempted to replace the timing chains and guides in a explorer befor?
we have acquired one noisy son of a bitch explorer and we r too scared to drive it around anymore fearing the chains will break out of the covers.
need timing chains and guides--kits --- best place to get them?
plus the tool kit to clamp the cams crank etc
any ideas would be good...

Re: ford explorer timing gear
Did a couple of them 8 or 9 years ago. The guides are crap in earlier ones and when they collapse it sounds like someone is throwing crockery everywhere.
Motor out and follow the steps shown in Nightjar's reference.
Clamps should be available easily at Repco or SCA. Parts are best got genuine as they did modify the earlier guides. Not sure about aftermarket stuff and it is a big job since the donkey has to come out.
It really is nothing major, just a long job

Re: ford explorer timing gear
thanks
hopefully we can do it over a weekend, once I have all the bits and tools.
no wonder people give these cars away when things go wrong with the chains.
this one is worst than plates and glasses being smashed--I mean really rattly, too scared to start it up and drive anywhere with it.
but will have a go anyway.
