After use dry out sock -put back on feet for a week or two and repeat the process again without meat this time.

Opera house trap with chicken carcase. Best way.

What the heck are redclaw doing in WA anyway?

mate they r in plague proportions and nothing seems to be done to eradicate them from our waterways.

Mind u in saying that I have never seen any Koonacs or yabbies or marron caught up here--maybe a well kept secret.

With flooding and unscrupulous individuals I think this problem is now going to escalate out of control.

I would venture to say that the Harding dam must be teaming with them.

Same with the humble yabbie, that was introduced also.
Our native WA koonaks and gilgies are hard to find now.
and for the eastern state people, be careful of buying barra in WA.  It could be the mongrel silver catfish from the Ord River.
The uneducated fish lovers get caught buying the crap and paying top dollar all the time and if hotels and restaurants have barra on the menu, beware.
They also sell fish here called barra but it's actaully Nile Perch, similar but not the same as ours.

Ray:
I have caught and eaten plenty of yabbies from dams around the place but I had never heard of Red Claws, so I did a Google search to see what they looked like.

Came up with this YouTube clip on catching them.  There are associated clips on how to make traps etc.

If RCs are like yabbies, they can taste a bit bland and are best eaten with a good dipping sauce.  Try Praise Deli Style Balsamic & Roasted Garlic (good with crab too!)

Yabbies and Redclaw in WA are classed as a pest.  seems in WA you can only use the opera house traps legally in Lake Kununurra.  Now that seems to be another example of stupid WA rules.  If they are a pest to native species then I'd think WA fisheries would welcome the thought of wiping them out.

Not the case so it seems.

Checking thru some youtube clips, it seems the red claw is also classed as a pest in the east.
If the Fisheries Dept here in the west is serious about getting rid of them, then we should be allowed to use traps but only take the red claw and put anything else back.
But I don't see them agreeing to it, it's another dept full of techheads, scientists and bleeding heart greenies.

Ahh... I don't think they are a pest in Qld. We nearly bought a redclaw farm.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is this somerset dam in QLD ??
Farming a species is totally different to having them running wild.
Yabby farming is allowed in WA but the buggers can be found almost anywhere.  Introduced to WA in 1932.  When did the red claw get here.
Either way it doesn't matter, the WA laws for catching them  best way to catch Red Claw?? 1533492315

I could be wrong and most likely am but I thought redclaw were vegeterians and I believe up in Qld they used something like boiled spuds as a bait in their traps. As an aside when we lived up north in Broome the kids used cheezels as a bait for cherabin and such.Must be the oils used in it I suppose.

boiled spuds and rockmellow--seems the way to go so once we get the traps we will have a go..maybe we will put in some of that Asian smelly fruit--Rotan or something like that just for a bit of an added appetiser.

Over here (QLD) they use broccoli for bait, and they are a pest. You can catch as many as you like but must not throw any back - even the small ones.

silly to have rules and regs for a feral species but the fisheries must know what they are doing right? whats next, a size limit on cane toads.
i always put a pot in for Koonaks when down south, best to purge all freshwater crays in fresh water that you change every few hrs to clean them up b4 cooking. most fresh water crays can live without water for a long time as they burrow into the mud so there should be a few around with the recent rains. hmmmmmm better hit Niagra b4 the muster lol  best way to catch Red Claw?? 1632602647

Hi Martin, Hasn't the Niagara Dam water got a nasty bug in it? Last time I was there, around 2005, there was a sign saying "No drinking", "No swimming", because of a bug.

Maybe it has flushed out???

dont know Roger, anyone heard bout this bug? a lot of water holes would be nasty depending on season and when the last washout occurred. always good to be careful. if nothing is living in the water then keep out and never allow water up ya nose. take usual precautions I guess and check with locals first.

It's probably there to warn people about the dangers of stagnant water and getting Meningococcal encephilitis.  I think that's what it's called and it can kill ya.

From memory that sign has been there since Adam was a boy and I remember a sign going back to 94.
It didn't stop people swimming or catching yabbies.

but why would ya go swimming in it anyway. Last time I was there, all around the edge was broken glass from idiots who smashed their empty stubbies. Unless it has been cleaned up, I wouldn't try walking into the water.

cheers
Cliff

Ray, I hope ya didn't tell them where you lived, not that I'm advocating dishonesty. the dopes at fisheries are probably sussing out the law to make it illegal to catch them.
