goldfields communications
Hi all,
I'm Keith and a newbie. I am currently setting up for extended trips to the various goldfields of WA. I have been researching various types of communications and in an ideal world I would spend some of my lotto winnings on a sat phone. As that win has not yet happened I am looking at alternatives.
I spoke to a chap the other day who has a Telstra "blue tick" phone (for rural use) and a vehicle mounted 2 metre mobile phone ariel and says that he always has a signal in the goldfields. Is this wishful thinking? Would love to hear if any of you guys have a similar outfit and how reliable they are or if it is a croc of you know what.
Cheers all,
Keith

Re: goldfields communications
Hey Mate, it really depends where you are, the aerials only generally help in my experience in areas where you are right on the edge of reception. Ive tried them in a few areas up this way a bit further out with no success.

Re: goldfields communications
Have used a Telstra country phone (F165) since CDMA was shut down. Car kit and bar mounted aerial serves us well.
Have found the use of a Yagi aerial in more remote areas increases reception to approximately 80kms.
As a rule it is line of sight so the higher the ground the better the reception.

Re: goldfields communications
Thanks much for your replies everyone, I guess the sat phone would be the most reliable. I was trying to get out of it cheap I guess, I already have a mobile phone nobody rings so the idea of buying another phone to sit quietly in the car with me doesn't really appeal! Maybe I should get more friends so the cost seems a little more justifiable!

Keith,
Have you thought about a HF radio?
You can get info here.

Have had one for about 15 years, Barrett 550, still going strong, you could pick one up for a song.

Re: goldfields communications
only trouble with that gizmo is Ray, ya gotta have an apple iphone and not everyone has one.
A lot of mobile phones have a port to plug in an external aerial to extend ya range.
I have an external aerial for my samsung with should give at least 70k's from the nearest tower but once again it depends on line of sight or climb a hill.
