Bit of an update. Been messing around with my 550 all week and trying a few things. I can get a connection to GeoMap if I use the external storage card connection function on the GPS itself but not with what is called "mass storage".
I've created a test map with GeoMap, all I gotta get now is a microSD card. More to come on this b*llsh*t and I'll lets ya's know what happens.

Etrex 10 and GeoMap.WA - Page 2 Empty Knowledge...

Post by MorryLorry Sun 24 Mar 2013, 10:36 pm

Guys,

The most common GPS we have is the smart-phone.

Here is a guideline for using it with your laptop:

Download + install Blue-NMEA (Android).
Run your GPS on the phone, and aquire position.
Start Blue-NMEA. (sometimes force crash the app if its been running for too long)
Load your laptop, and turn on Bluetooth.
Assign a Comm port in the blue-tooth settings on Windows.
Download and install GOOps, and select the comm-port.
Google earth with now use your phone's GPS signal.
(or any other mapping software with a comm port selector).

For bonus marks, try replicating the port for use on mulitple mapping software at the same time. I run 3.
I did this all for free, using google when I got stuck. It's not easy, but once its setup, its brilliant.

Regards,

Morry Lorry

I've just had a chat with the spatial data man at DMP and here's what he tells me.

1. the maps you open in GeoMap can't be downloaded into a GPS. if you can work out a way of doing it, they would like to know.
2. the maps can be downloaded if you have JPG2000, what ever that is.
3. try the NMEA connection, he thinks it should work.

And that's all I can tell ya's. It's all too technical for me. Think I'll just download some maps into my laptop.

I've been p*ss*in around with my garmin all day. I can't get a connection with an Oregan 550. Oh well, that's life.

I haven't tried NMEA yet so it's got me stumped.

PS.  I did follow the intructions according to the user guide page51.

I'm also having trouble connecting a Garmin 550 to GeoMap. The handbook just suggests plugging it to a USB port, and presto... but... 'not all is gold that glitters!'
the message just keeps repeating:' cannot connect'. I think I might phone Garmin Perth for more info. Would be nice to transfer waypoints to the tablet.

G'd day Cliff,
After fiddelling around a bit I managed to connect the Garmin 550 to GeoMap.
Here is how: On the Garmin go to SETUP--SYSTEM--INTERFACE--NMEA(in/out)--AUTOPILOT--on. Connect to computer. In GeoMap( in your project) go to GPS TRACKING--GPS CONNECTION SETTINGS--CONNECTION TYPE--Garmin USB.
With a bit of 'old fashioned luck, Bob should be your uncle.

Cheers, Eddie Very Happy

Hello Cliff,
I'm not sure whether you ever solved your connection problem; I've had the same since last week, and fiddelling around a bit, was successful this morning.
Here is how: On the Oregon(550 or 450) go to SETUP--SYSTEM--INTERFACE--NMEA(in/out)--AUTOPILOT MODE--on.
On your computer (in your project) go to GPS TRACKING--GPS CONNECTION SETTINGS--CONNECTION TYPE--Garmin USB. And with a bit of 'old fashioned luck'
Bob should be your uncle!

Cheers, Eddie
