Pine Creek gold Empty Pine Creek gold

Post by toad Sat 02 Mar 2013, 9:33 am

Managed to get out yesterday for a swing but it was damn humid and pretty hard going in the spear grass. It's only possible to cover about 5% of the ground because of the vegetation but 90 minutes was enough to get two bits for 6.3grams. The specie is about 95% gold with ironstone staining. I got no idea why these photos came out upside down!

That grass looks like it would be a pain in the ar*e trying to swing in,well done on the bits you got.I'd probably prefer spinny than that grass.

K town.

Toad,
That spear grass is only short at the moment. I can remember doing survey work in the Pine Creek / Katherine areas in March / April /May in the early 80's, and the f'n spear grass was 6 feet high.
Had to use a scythe just to clear line of sight for the jigger ! Laughing
Nice gold BTW !

Cheers,
Rick

Thanks for the photo fix Bignuggs.
Lucky it's been a poor Wet up this way or that grass would have been over my head. I wouldn't let my wife wield a weapon like a whipper snipper. One wrong word from me and who knows what would happen!

without giving away too much Toad, roughly what area.
Been scratching around for the last 12 month with not much to show for it. Haven't tried the Pine Creek area though, mainly been around Bridge Creek.

hi toad, some nice pieces there, congrats on the find. my brother is currently in Katherine or close about for the next few weeks, trying to catch his first barra, he would love to have a swing whilst he is there but has no idea of the ground etc as he is like me only new to detecting. I was reading up on the pine creek find during the construction of the overland railway, quite a feat for its time. if your open to it he would love to contact you for any advise b4 setting out in the pine creek area. pm me if you can help, no worries if not just asking.
keep well and find heaps
martin

Hi
I was told a story about a 5 ounce Nugget found at Pine Creek.
I will share with you.
A Gold Detector fellow I met, at Clermont Gold Fields Queensland.
He told me he was on the road to the Pine Creek Council Tip NT.
There was a council worker digging out a culvert along this road with a dozer.
He asks if the guy could spread the soil out for him to detect the soil.
The dozer driver said it was fine and he spread the soil out for him.
This is where he told me he picked up the 5 ounce nugget.
It is a story and I never saw the nugget myself.
I asked my old mate Des if that could happen with him finding this nugget.
As he owned a large Station there and was a local he knew they were finding gold in that area.
He said there were a lot of gold mines out there.
So that was 2 different old people saying it was possible to find gold there.
You never know your luck.
Regards Neale

hi Shelby , only a week ago I heard a similar story about pine creek from a non prospector who was working there at the time when they put in the new ring road round pine creek & an aboriginal tector operator was filling jars of nuggets at night following the grader trail.. reckons he saw some of the gold he had.
